Maruchan Akai Kitsune Udon is one of the most popular cup noodles and definitely the most famous cup udon in Japan. Akai Kitsune (translated as Red Fox) was introduced in 1975 as the first cup udon in Japan, and made famous by a TV commercial with nationally acclaimed actor Kiyoshi Atsumi. In 1997, another actor Tetsuya Takeda began advertising Akai Kitsune and its sister product Midorino Tanuki (translated as Green Racoon) Udon and he has been the face of both products for decades.
Akai Kitsune Udon has become even more popular after "washoku" , Japanese cuisine, was registered as Intangible Cultural World Heritage by UNESCO in 2014.
