Maruchan Midori no Tanuki Udon is one of the most popular cup noodles and definitely the most famous cup udon in Japan. Midori no Tanuki (translated as Green Racoon) was introduced in 1975 as the first cup udon in Japan, and made famous by a TV commercial with nationally acclaimed actor Kiyoshi Atsumi. In 1997, another actor Tetsuya Takeda began advertising Midori no Tanuki and its sister product Akai Kitsune (translated as Red Fox) Udon and he has been the face of both products for decades.
Akai Kitsune Udon has become even more popular after washoku" , Japanese cuisine, was registered as Intangible Cultural World Heritage by UNESCO in 2014.
