Description:
Our golden superfood. The favorite of athletes (increased energy & endurance, quicker recovery), women (relieves menstrual cramps & balances menopausal symptoms), and stressed workaholics (deeper and shorter sleep, waking up refreshed and energized).
More Details:
Maca is a root that grows in the mineral rich volcanic soil of Bolivia and Peru. It grows in intense climates where no other plant survives, absorbing the nutrients of the rich soil all to itself.
Known as a stress adaptogen, Maca curtails the effects of stress, whether physical or mental, by regenerating the adrenal glands and lowering cortisol levels (Cortisol is a hormone released by the body when it is stressed). When cortisol is low, people are able to sleep deeply (resulting with less hours of sleep needed) and function more efficiently. Maca is also rich in sterols which promote regeneration of fatigued muscles, leading to quicker recovery from physical stress.
Other benefits of Maca include curbing sugar and carbohydrate cravings, as well as balancing hormones in men and in women through its alkaloids that nourish the endocrine system (Maca balances testosterone levels in men; it also regulates reproductive hormones in women, lessening the impact of dysmenorrhea and alleviating menopausal imbalance). In short, Maca helps us recover faster, function better, and bust through our stress limits, making it a true superfood.

Take 1/2 to 1 tsp daily. Mix with your daily green smoothie or with water, if need be. We recommend starting out with 1/4-1/2 teaspoon per day (can also be split into 2 servings throughout the day, 1/4 tsp each), then building up to 1/2-1 tsp per day.
Maca's effects are felt cumulatively so consuming routinely everyday will bring a bigger benefit than just taking occasionally. Usually, effects are felt after about a week of daily consumption.
Maca is non-toxic and plant-based, there are no negative effects. Elite athletes take up to 1-2 tbsp a day during heavy training. If more than 2 tbsp, the marginal benefits decrease and added dosage does not provide any additional benefits.
Taking too much maca too soon could be detrimental as the body is not used to it. For those just starting out, we recommend just starting with 1/4-1/2 tsp before increasing dosage gradually (for about 3 days). Maca is a powerful superfood and should be consumed with respect especially by first timers. We cannot emphasize this enough, as its best to start with a small dosage, typically 1/4-1/2 tsp and build up slowly.
A 1/2 lb bag lasts around 1.5 months if taking 1 tsp a day, and a 1 lb bag usually lasts 3 months.
Maca is suitable for all ages, as well. For children, we recommend lowering the dosage to 1/8-1/4 tsp.
Taking a one day break from maca every week or a few days a month maintains the body's responsiveness to maca's nourishing effects. You can also consume Maca by cooking it with food and experience similar benefits.
